Your business’ employee handbook is an important document for disseminating information to employees. Here are a few things that every good handbook should include.
Breaks
Everybody needs to take breaks to eat, use the restroom, make important phone calls and other necessary tasks. A good handbook explains the frequency, duration and location of breaks.
Clothing
A good handbook delineate exactly what should be worn to work. Depending on the position, an employee may need to wear clothing suited to outside weather or shoes appropriate for wet floors. Don’t make your employee guess what he or she should wear on a day-to-day basis.
Drug Policy
In some professions, drug use is rampant. Decide whether or not to prohibit use of drugs (inlcuding alcohol and cigarettes) at the work place. Remember that prohibiting use of cigarettes or other substances may exclude qualified workers. Your employee handbook should explicitly state what is and is not allowed while at work.
Pay
A good employee handbook explains the frequency of pay and method of payment. Employees should never wonder when their paycheck is coming in, and they should have a course of action to pursue should payment be delayed.
Employee handbooks should cover a wide variety of topics so that employees are informed about expectations. These are just a few things that should be included in a good employee handbook.
